Creationists

It didn't don on me until I was somewhat recently acquainted with the term creationism that many people think the earth is only about 6,000 years old. This a huge problem, but it goes so much deeper than that.

If you think that the earth is only about 6,000 years old then you write off so many things, carbon dating for example. Carbon dating is based off of the decay of an isotope of carbon, carbon -14. It's an observation that, barring all philosophical discussions, should be regarded as fact. So, if you don't believe that this planet is older than 6,000 years then you don't believe in radiocarbon dating. If you were to isolate the two and just take someone who doesn't believe in radiocarbon dating, would it not be acceptable to call them ignorant? Well then what about creationists?

This is a weird thing to post about because there are going to be some people that read this and say, "Duh, creationists live in their own fantasy world!" and there are going to be others that will pray for me to be saved be Jesus and other such nonsense, and still there are others that would like to see me hanging from a churchyard tree struggling for my last breaths.

Creationists are the epitome of desperation, they will do anything to keep the reality they live in real. They will distort any facts and they will refute any evidence. They will never see the light of day, thats how effective brainwashing usually is.

I'd like to think that most Agnostics are like me. They grew up a relatively normal life, had religious parents and were exposed to religion and faith but instead looked to science and questions for the answers to life's biggest quandaries. I wasn't raised by some god hating fanatics, I just asked questions, and "god did it" was never an answer. You see I've witnessed a profoundly simple phenomenon. Things that are easily explainable always have answers: Why does ice expand when frozen? Because the water molecules align in a crystalline structure. And the things that are harder to explain are always attributed as god's will. Where did life come from? God did it. So, if you take into account this phenomenon and the fact that through out history as more and more things are easily explainable and god has less and less responsibilities (e.i. Lighting wasn't zeus' doing, it's the buildup of differing charges between layers of atmosphere or the earth) isn't the logical conclusion that humanity will mature beyond religion and accept the world for what it is? Yes, but I doubt it.

There is a claim that I like to make, and I have the advantage of being able to make this claim knowing that I can never be proven wrong (sound familiar?).

I believe that at the end of mankind someone will truthfully be able to say, "Damn we'd have survived this if it weren't for religion!" and the only sad thing about that is that we won't evolve to that understanding it will be the end of us. When that day comes we're all going to die.

Partisans

I try not to pay attention to the news. I mean I really try. Since we the people have the choice to be ignorant or misinformed, I choose the former.

But today I couldn't help but notice a headline babbling about campaigning and fund raising for the 2008 presidential election. It was all about how the Reps and Dems have certain advantages and disadvantages when it comes to being able to raise funds from their target demographics.

Now, this opinion of mine is nothing new. It's nothing ground breaking, and you might not even find it thought provoking....

Why (the hell) do we have political parties? What good do they do? As far as I can see all they do is give crooks a leg to stand on when they need help and a face to spit on when they are accused. What is the point in forming political cliques? What function does it serve other than to make all of these people richer and richer, and allow legitimate legislation to take longer and longer to be decided on.

Humans can not be labeled. We are all different. I'm not: Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Liberal, radical, or reactionary. Why do I have to label myself as such? I'm me. I have my own values. I wouldn't ever lump mine in with anyone else's for fear of being persecuted for the actions of others in my clique?

Is it me or is our government just the 13th grade in our educational system?

I think that our electoral system needs have a complete overhaul. There should be no political parties. There should be no campaigning or mudslinging. It shouldn't be a choice between the lesser of two weevils. The public's exposure to presidential candidates should be an unbiased environment where citizens can listen to all political candidates, then they can filter the ones they don't agree with and advocate the ones that are agreeable.

Someone's gotta say it....

American Idol does a better job of picking a winner than our electoral system!

Productivity

I'm not productive at work. I'm not motivated. I'm not challenged. I'm not utilized. Productivity is a pack mentality. It's a word for an entities progress towards a goal, but the entity is usually a group, and the one producing the work is usually an individual. Maybe this attitude means I'm not a team player. Maybe this is a truth that means that no one is truly a team player. Maybe humans are not meant to be team players.

I think about this often. What are humans "meant" to do. Was I destined to become who I am, or has the world cornered me and made come to the decision.

Who really does what they want to do? Does anyone want to live their life on a schedule?

This inner conflict is a question with no answer. Most questions don't have answers, only informed guesses, or answers with an acceptable margin of error....Has truth been lost to us, or have we never found it?

This entry is about productivity though, right? Thats what the title says. Well my productivity is inhibited by all these questions. Some might not seem to have any association, but they plague my soul with doubt and a constant sense that something is not right with the world. That humans are simply stumbling blindly through this plain of existance with no more meaning than a snail coasting over a rock, or a deer grazing a field. The world as we know it, all of the social expectations, standards, morals, ethics, rules, regulations, was built by us....but when did I get to have my say? I'm a generation that is lost in countless other generations. Just another young adult that has no idea how to make a difference or even how to get what I want out of life.

...how can I be productive with this on my shoulders?
